Florida home insurance may help you to pick up the pieces and rebuild your home after a house fire, but imagine how distressed you would be if a family pet was lost in the fire. You may be comforted to know that firefighters will try to save your pet if your house is burning; many fire departments have special resuscitation kits designed to administer oxygen to animals affected by smoke inhalation.

Firefighters and animal welfare organizations recommend a few precautions that householders can take to reduce the risk of a pet being lost in a house fire.

1. Display pet emergency decals on the front of your house so that firefighters know how many pets are in your home.

2. Make sure that your pets are micro chipped or wearing identification, to improve the chances of a pet being found and identified if it escapes from a house fire.

3. Keep pet collars and leashes somewhere handy so that they can be grabbed before you evacuate a burning house.

4. You may have to evacuate a burning house without your pets; if this happens, try to keep pets near entrance doors where firefighters can find them more easily.

While Florida home insurance may compensate you for losses resulting from house fires, it cannot prevent fire or help you or your pets to escape from a burning building. Smoke detectors and alarms provide early warning of fire, and are an important defense against house fires.
